Harvey Fleegler

Harvey loved the outdoors and exploring different places. He spent over 30 years at Camp Canadensis in the Poconos. He was a true outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed teaching others to fish, including a generation of Camp Canadensis alumni, and most recently his grandsons. He was very resourceful and would tie his own flies and even make his own bullets. He loved to travel both overseas and across the United States, including driving his Honda Accord above the artic circle in Alaska.

An early view of Shafer's Corner in Mountainhome is seen in this 1906 postcard from our collection. Shafer's Store, which also served as the post office, is pictured on the left. Built by C. W. Decker, the store was located on present-day Route 191. Over the years, the building has also housed a waxworks, a paint store, an Acme store, an antique shop, and is currently home to Pocono Bible Church.

Seguine & Shannon, a general merchandise store located near the Cresco railroad station, was called "The Cresco Cash Store" when it opened in 1891. In addition to ready-made clothing, it sold dry goods, notions, gents furnishings, window shades, groceries, crockery, glassware, paints and oils.

Jun. 7—A man faces felony charges for providing drugs that resulted in a woman's overdose death earlier this year in Wayne County.

State police at Honesdale charged Todd Wignall, 56, with felony first-degree drug delivery resulting in death, felony manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver and involuntary manslaughter. Wignall also faces multiple misdemeanor charges.

Jennifer Trasente discovered her friend, Amanda Parry deceased and Wignall unresponsive at her home at 1037 Main St., Dreher Twp. on Jan. 11, according to a criminal complaint.

Responding troopers found three lines of white powder, two besides Parry's credit card, a cut straw and baggie with white residue, the complaint reads.

Wignall, whose listed address is the Wayne County Correctional Facility, told troopers on Jan. 21 he received the drugs from an individual in Mountainhome, Monroe County, in exchange for helping him, according to the complaint. On Jan. 24, he told them he arrived at Trasente's home and saw Trasente and Parry smoking methamphetamine. Wignall went to take a shower and while undressing, removed a bread bag containing a powder substance he believed to be heroin and put it on the kitchen table.

The Inn-to-Inn Trail, The Poconos

The Poconos is littered with places to stay, with plenty of hotels (some of them are abandoned honeymoon resorts in the Poconos). The best way to enjoy all the luxury lodgings and comfy cabins that the Poconos has to offer is with an inn-to-inn hike like the Inn-to-Inn Trail, which takes hikers through bubbling brooks, gushing waterfalls, and thick hemlock forests.

The Inn-to-Inn hiking trail in the Poconos takes hikers 40 miles down the mountain from Skytop Lodge to Buck Hill Falls. The ancient inn at Buck Hill Falls may no longer be there, but hikers can still enjoy pleasant stays at Skytop Lodge, Pocono Manor, Crescent Lodge, and Country Inn along the way down to the gorgeous resort at Buck Hill Falls.

State Rep. Tarah Probst is introducing legislation that would ban the sale of consumer-grade fireworks in Pennsylvania.

“The usage of fireworks has become a real nuisance in some areas, causing stress to pets and livestock, depriving people of sleep, and negatively impacting veterans and others with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),” said Probst, a Democrat representing parts of Monroe and Pike counties, in a sponsorship memo.

“Additionally, there have been daily complaints in the summertime of people not following the law and shooting off fireworks in small towns, boroughs, and residential areas, potentially causing collateral damage throughout our communities,” Probst said in the memo.
