Update 7/12/18:
This ordinance was passed at the last night's (July 11) meeting

Clarification:
This ordinance only applies to 'large' fireworks displays (e.g. if you hire a professional company).  All others are regulated by the State of Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania's purchases of consumer-grade fireworks are limited to buyers 18 and older, and have usage restrictions, including requiring permission from the property owner, not using them inside buildings or motor vehicles or within 150 feet of an occupied structure.

Gravel Family Preserve / Mt. Wismer

The Gravel Family Preserve offers a wide variety of habitat including high and low bush blueberry fields, grassy old farm field, hardwood forest, huge wetland, and steep slopes rising 2000 feet to the Mt. Wismer Preserve. This 170 acre property is located off Gravel Road. Take Route 447 north from the light in Canadensis, go approximately 3 miles and turn right onto Gravel Road. Continue for 0.2 miles to the entrance on your left. Pull in to the parking area. The trail begins at the metal gate, travel through a field and notice the swamp on the right, home to woodcock and a variety of wildlife. The trail meanders through additional fields, into an old hardwood forest and then back to a stream feeding the wetland. Here you can view an old stonework foundation.

Mount Wismer Preserve offers a panoramic view of Barrett Township from the escarpment of the Pocono Plateau. This Preserve is 90+ acres, and includes hardwood forest, open fields, and a variety of wildflowers. From the edge of the plateau, you can see the Delaware Water Gap, and ski areas for Shawnee and Camelback. Early morning mist often delineates the creeks that flow into the Brodhead. In the fall, the view of changing colors is spectacular.

Trails are completed and marked. A gravel road brings you into the Preserve, going downhill, then climbs steeply. At the end is a narrow trail going up to the plateau where you can enjoy the view.

Pasold Farm Nature Preserve

Welcome to the Pasold Farm Nature Preserve.  This 64 acre parcel includes a quarter mile of Brodhead Creek frontage, and is a delightful example of a wide variety of habitats.  Located off Spruce Cabin Road, (south of the Canadensis light on Rt. 447), cross the bridge and take the first right.  Continue to the parking area on the left.  Here you can see the old stone foundation that was once a barn.  If you continue on the road there is additional parking on the right for the Community Garden, and at the end on the left.

Our drinking water contains chlorine, arsenic, copper, and lead.  (On the bright side, at least it doesn’t contain fluoride!)

Are you drinking FILTERED water?
Below are some suggestions for filtering the water in your home.

  1. Install a sediment filter on your incoming water line.  This will help protect your appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, etc) from any particles that come into your plumbing:
    https://www.amazon.com/Culligan-HF-360A-Sediment-Cartridge-Included/dp/B000BQUPZ8/

  2. Get a drinking water filter like this for your kitchen:
    http://www.bigberkeywaterfilters.com/

These filters are MUCH nicer than a standard “Brita” filter, which pass water through charcoal.  These Berkey filters are essentially filtering water through a stone.  The filters are able to filter red food coloring out of water.  They also remove chlorine and other soft metals.  The photo attached to this article shows a “3 years later” shot of our Berkey filter element.  Note that we have been putting approximately 1 gallon of “AQUA Public Water” through this filter every day.

We encourage everyone to drink clean water and eat quality food.

Even if you have well water, adding the above filters to your home’s water system couldn’t hurt.
