"Although the morning was very cold, the Veteran’s Day Ceremony was held on Saturday, November 11th at 11AM in High Acres Park. The High Acres Park Committee had arranged a beautiful service attended by veterans and their families, the local Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, American Legion Color Guard and residents. Fortunately the sun shone brightly on our glorious flag, and all attending were grateful to those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Joe O’Malley not only emceed but sang a beautiful tribute while playing his guitar. Rosemary Brown, State Representative, gave a heartfelt thanks to all the veterans and their families for their service; and Summer Shumway, a 94 year old veteran from WWII, spoke very movingly about his service and family. In addition Linda Spoerer, Commander of our local American Legion, added her feelings about the tribute, and Betty Oppelt, Past President, read the Veterans Poem. After the ceremony, a warm and welcoming Open House was held for all attendees at our local American Legion.
Thanks should be extended not only to the High Acre Park Committee (Nicole Hilfiger, Priscilla Blitz Kice, Cherie Jean Jones, Susan Seese, Gloria Smith, and Sonia White) but also to Stonewall Gardens for creating and donating the lovely evergreen swag placed on top of the Veterans Memorial."
